I was apprehensive about finding somebody to advise me on a painting that had a mark on it and I thought needed cleaning generally. You never know who you are going to get when you search the internet and my painting has a lot of sentimental … More value. I am so grateful that I came across Alan’s details. From my first communication with him he gave me the confidence that he could help. I initially sent photos which he was able to give some advice and suggestions from. I then took my painting into him where he could identify what the dirt was on it and gave a couple of different suggestions of how I could proceed. He explained everything well and it is obvious he is passionate about doing the best job for your painting. I know Alan has a wait list but as my painting is small and was only having surface level work done it was a timely turnaround. When I collected the painting, I was quite emotional about how transformed it was. The colours are so much more vibrant and Alan also fixed a slight scratch which you would never know was there now. He also cleaned the frame for me which I had decided not to change. From my experience, I would definitely recommend Alan. Thanks Alan! -
Alan is hugely knowledgeable and very skilled. I asked him his view on what needed to be done to conserve a much-loved 300 year old Dutch portrait that had become rather tired. I very much enjoyed the preliminary sleuthing Alan did with … More his UV light, which revealed a lot of interesting detail about the physical history of the picture. We considered in detail the best way forward, and he and I agreed that minimal conservation would be sufficient and would best preserve the picture’s “story”. He cleaned the picture and repaired bits where necessary, and the result was stunning. All the colours and detail came to life, without making the picture seem ‘restored’. He also revived the gilded intricate wooden frame, but then ‘aged’ it so that it was not too shiny. Overall, he managed to achieve a very sensitive restoration, with which I was delighted, and might I add, he did this for a very reasonable price.
He told me it would take him a few months because he was busy, and it did, but the wait was certainly worth it, and anyway, who wants a speedy restoration?!
I cannot recommend Alan highly enough. -

Alan did an absolutely fantastic job on cleaning up a painting that had a lot of sentimental value to us. It was a painting my late wife had done but in one of her many redecorating urges, she had taken the painting down and (unbeknown … More to us) stored it in the garage unprotected. There it had got bent, dirty and had mould on it.
Alan cleaned it up, touching parts up where needed and reframed it, and it now looks exactly as we remember it when it was up on the wall. Thank you for a first rate job. -

Alan restored a 100 year old family painting which had been ingrained with years of smoke from tobacco and coal/wood fires. From the very first contact Alan was informative and very clear about the work needed and the cost/time it would … More take. I was prepared to wait the anticipated 3yrs but surprised when it was finished earlier. The finished result is so good all the colours jump out of the picture. My great great grandad who painted the picture was a real amateur who painted for fun but Alan has now given us a picture that will hopefully be in the family for another 100 years. A truly talented man.
