Alan is an expert in cleaning and restoring paintings, breathing new life into the finest artwork. His work reverses the accumulation of years of dirt, smoke and grime which make oil paintings become dark and details obscured or lost – ‘it’s as if you are viewing the painting through amber-brown tinted glasses’, but once the work is complete, you’re left with a true beauty once again.
Although the painting itself is important, the picture support receives the same amount of care and attention. Alan repairs and stabilises the support, whether it’s wood panel, metal, paper, cardboard, composition board or canvas.

I have three Victorian oil paintings which belonged to my grandparents and are of great sentimental value. One had been badly damaged in a house move. Alan repaired the huge tear and beautifully restored all three pictures and frames. They now hang on my wall, ready, in time, to move to the next generation. Alan did a great job of restoring an 18th century painting for us. It needed cleaning and had suffered some damage and paint loss over the years, but Alan brought it back to its original glorious condition. He also helped us to choose a frame which shows off our painting to best advantage. The end result was outstandingly good. Alan is much in demand and top-quality work can’t be rushed, but in our experience the final outcome was superb.

Yesterday I collected a 19th century family portrait in oils, which Alan had cleaned and restored. He also
replaced lost moulding on the frame and brought it back to its original splendour. I am delighted with the
quality of Alan’s work, which he completed within the time he had estimated. He also gave me some
interesting background about the artist. The picture now glows as it hangs on the wall, and I am sure will
be a treasured possession of the subject’s great, great grandson, to whom the picture has been given.
